As yet another academic session concluded, no student except one from the state government-funded schools in entire Mohali district managed to secure a position on the list of top-100 students in Class-X Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) results, declared on Tuesday.

The lone exception to the rule was Navneet Kaur, who landed a rank of 64 on the merit list and secured 93.85% marks. She is a student of G S Memorial Public Senior Secondary School in Zirakpur.

Speaking to TOI, PSEB chairman Dalbir Singh Dhillon said, ''A total of 3,52,948 students appeared for the exams and 2,27,009 cleared, with a pass percentage of 64.32%. Pass percentage of boys ' regular candidates ' was 70.23% and those of private candidates was 44.74%. Overall pass percentage of boys was 66%.''

He said, ''For girls, the numbers were better as regular candidates secured a pass percentage of 75.58%, private candidates secured 58.16%. The overall pass percentage was 73.10%.''

Dhillon said the pass percentage for all students declined in the state from 84.68% in 2009 to 77.94% in 2010 and 64.32% in 2011.

''Ludhiana district has 55 students on the list, followed by Hoshiarpur district with 34 students and Amritsar district with 30 students. Mohali district managed to get only one student on the list while there was none from Tarn Taran,'' Dhillon said.

The abject condition of the schools in Mohali is a testament to the fact that no student has made it to the top-50 on the merit list for the past five years.

The state government is more than willing to allot land to private schools, colleges and universities rather than improve the condition of their own schools.

Vacancies for the posts of teachers have been untouched for the past many years. State government had promised a recruitment of more teachers but nothing had been done.
