Jaipur: The results for Rajasthan pre-engineering test (RPET) 2011, held on May 19 this year, were declared on Thursday.

Shefali Garg of Alwar topped the examination. Some 67,990 candidates had appeared in the exam to get admission in various government and private engineering institutes of Rajasthan.

While there are 47,847 seats on offer for engineering aspirants in 150-odd private and government colleges affiliated to the Rajasthan Technical University, a large chunk of seats – 3882 seats – are offered by just nine state-run colleges.

This year, too, the examination was conducted by Board of Technical Education for admission to engineering colleges affiliated to Rajasthan Technical University. However, the results were declared by department of technical education. Meanwhile, there are no cut-off marks announced by the department unlike other engineering competitive entrance tests.

"There is no provision for declaring cut-offs for the RPET candidates, but we come out with merit order. That will be followed by students' preference in option forms for counselling," said SK Singh, director, Board of Technical Education.

He says that the students will be allotted merit order that will be considered during their counselling.

Similarly, the counselling will be processed after the counselling of AIEEE and IIT JEE is over so that students would have clear picture about their line of preference.

However, the colleges would be trying hard this year too to fill their seats to the maximum possible limit as more than 15,000 seats were left vacant last year. Similarly, the AICTE's provision that revised the eligibility criteria to 50 per cent marks in class 12 board exams may also be the deterrent to engineering colleges.

"Till date, it's not clear how many students have been below the eligibility criteria. But when the counselling will be processed, we would have a clear picture about the number of students eligible for admission to engineering colleges", said Shashikant Singhi, director, Poornima Group of Colleges.

However, he claims that the colleges in urban areas of the state would attract more students compared to those operating in rural areas.
